The change of society has been always accompanied by the new technology. The farming technology -- it is a technology in a sense that you need to choose proper plants and breed -- changed the form of human lives completely: from nomadism to settlement. More recently, a steam engine enabled us to utilize more energy and power. Chemical fertilizers, invented in 20th century, effected an tremendous increase of population, accelerating the development of technology even further by providing more geniuses and man-power. In last few decades, the society has been transformed entirely again with the invention of modern computers. Intelligence and information are considered to be most important qualities in this era because most of physical obstacles that had existed before are now obsolete.
